R1794A : Electric Car Conversion: The Essentials
Registrant: [To be determined]

Here's some good news...you don't have to drive a gas-powered car or truck. People all over the country are converting vehicles to run on 100% electric power. This class will discuss the basics: how far you can drive on a charge, what kind of batteries and motor to use, and how much the project might cost. (Instructors Kobb and Swann spent approximately $14,000 and $9,000 respectively to convert their vehicles). In class, their car and truck will be on display. You will have your questions answered and receive a booklet that spells out the details of what is involved in the electric conversion process.

Steve Kobb (MS, Social Science, U of Chicago) & Bill Swann (BS, Engineering, Vanderbilt) worked together to convert a 2002 Chevy truck to all-electric power. Taking into account the cost of the batteries, the cost of driving this truck is 12.5 cents a mile. It will go 35-40 miles on a charge and takes five hours to recharge.

There are still openings in this class at this time.
